Adult Day Services: What It Is and Who It's For

Supervised daytime programs offering activities, meals, and social engagement — often a lifeline for working family caregivers.

Adult day services (sometimes called adult day care or adult day health care) provide supervised care and activities for older adults during daytime hours, typically at a dedicated facility, with participants returning home each evening. It's one of the least understood categories of senior care, but often one of the most useful for families juggling caregiving with work or other responsibilities.

Social model versus medical model

Adult day programs generally fall into two types. A social model program focuses on activities, meals, companionship, and general supervision — well suited to seniors who are safe to be up and about but benefit from structure and social engagement during the day. An adult day health care (medical model) program adds a clinical component, such as health monitoring, medication administration, and therapies, and is typically appropriate for participants with more complex medical needs or those recovering from an illness or injury.

Who benefits most

Adult day services are often the right fit for two overlapping groups: seniors who live with a family caregiver who works during the day or otherwise needs daytime coverage, and seniors who would benefit from more social stimulation and structured activity than they get sitting at home alone. It's also frequently used as a lower-cost alternative or supplement to full-time home care or residential care, letting a senior remain living at home longer while still getting meaningful daytime support and engagement.

What a typical day looks like

Most programs run on a set daily schedule with group activities, exercise or movement programs, meals (often lunch and snacks), and social time, with staff supervising throughout. Transportation to and from the program is frequently offered or arranged, which is worth asking about directly since it affects whether the program is realistically usable for a given family.
