HomeFAQ › Independent vs. Assisted Living

What's the Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living?

Independent living is built for older adults who don't need daily hands-on help -- it removes the burden of home upkeep (cooking, cleaning, yard work) while residents remain fully self-sufficient. Assisted living adds actual care on top of that: trained staff available around the clock to help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and mobility. The buildings often look similar from the outside, with dining rooms and activity calendars in both, but the difference is what's included in the monthly rate. A helpful gut-check: if a parent just wants less responsibility around the house, independent living usually fits; if they need someone checking on medication or helping them get dressed safely, assisted living is the more appropriate -- and safer -- choice.
