Fairfield County lies southeast of Franklin County, with Lancaster as its county seat — an older manufacturing and mill town with a well-established downtown, distinct from the newer suburban growth along the county's northern edge. That northern edge is where most Columbus-area families actually run into Fairfield County: Pickerington straddles the Fairfield/Franklin county line, and while a meaningful part of the city sits in Franklin County, its primary address and much of its growth is in Fairfield.
